Warren General Hospital will conduct a full-scale decontamination drill on Tuesday as part of its ongoing emergency preparedness efforts.

The exercise, scheduled to take place rain or shine, is designed to evaluate the hospital’s ability to respond to incidents involving hazardous materials and to test emergency response procedures.

The drill will involve the hospital’s trained decontamination team and volunteers portraying patients of various ages, including children and adults. Simulated chemical exposure scenarios will be used to provide realistic training for hospital staff.

The exercise will focus on the procedures used to receive, assess and decontaminate individuals who may have been exposed to hazardous substances before they receive additional medical treatment.

During the drill, staff members will practice each stage of the decontamination process, including patient triage in the designated “hot zone,” full-body decontamination and transfer to the “cold zone” for continued care. Team members also will review safety procedures, including monitoring patients’ vital signs and ensuring protective equipment is functioning properly.

Hospital officials said routine emergency exercises help ensure staff members are prepared to respond quickly and effectively during real emergencies involving hazardous materials.

Warren General Hospital regularly conducts emergency preparedness training and reviews its response plans as part of its efforts to maintain readiness for incidents that could affect patients and the surrounding community.
