Kindergarten enrollment in the Warren County School District remains below expectations as administrators continue working to register students ahead of the start of the 2026-27 school year.
District officials told the school board during Monday night’s Committee of the Whole meeting that registration numbers are lower than anticipated across all elementary attendance areas, although new enrollments continue to be processed each week.
As of the meeting, the district had about 150 kindergarten students registered. Enrollment by school includes:
-- Warren Area Elementary Center: 71 students
-- Eisenhower Elementary: 43 students
-- Sheffield Elementary: 21 students
-- Youngsville Elementary Middle School: 19 students
Administrators noted the reported figures do not include every family currently in the registration process. Several applications remain incomplete while parents submit required documents such as immunization records, and some families continue to register using paper forms rather than the district’s online system.
District staff meets weekly to review pending registrations and follow up with families to complete enrollment requirements.
Various board members expressed interest in monitoring the numbers as the first day of school approaches, noting that kindergarten enrollment often serves as an early indicator of future district enrollment trends. They also stated low enrollment numbers could be a result of Warren County’s declining population.
However, administrators cautioned against drawing conclusions too early, noting that kindergarten registration often accelerates in the weeks before school begins. In some years, enrollment has increased significantly late in the summer.
To encourage additional registrations, the district plans to maintain a presence at the Warren County Fair, where staff will remind families to enroll kindergarten students and complete the district’s annual student information updates.
The discussion also highlighted a broader enrollment decline in the district. Officials reported that enrollment in grades 6 through 12 has dropped from approximately 2,116 students in April to 2,077 students currently enrolled, continuing a trend of declining student population that district leaders said they will continue to monitor.
