Warren County School District administrators say the district’s decision to return to in-person middle school summer school continues to produce positive results, with most participating students successfully completing their coursework.
During this week's Committee of the Whole meeting, district officials shared the results of the second year of the in-person summer program, which was reintroduced after virtual summer school proved ineffective for many middle school students.
According to administrators, 31 middle school students were identified as needing summer remediation after failing two or more core academic subjects, including math, English, science or social studies.
Of those students, 25 attended the district’s three-week, in-person summer program. It was reported that 21 students successfully completed all required coursework, making enough academic progress to avoid additional remediation.
The remaining four students will continue receiving academic support during the school year. Administrators said individualized remediation plans will be developed, including assigning study halls focused on credit recovery and skill development before students advance further in their coursework.
The district shifted back to an in-person model after virtual middle school summer school programs produced consistently poor results.
The in-person model has allowed students to receive direct instruction from teachers while improving participation and completion rates for students who need additional academic support before the new school year begins.
