Daughters of American Revolution welcome new members
Casey Ferry was sworn in as a member of the General Joseph Warren Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The General Joseph Warren Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution welcomed its newest members, Casey Ferry, and daughter, Natasha Ferry. Both were eligible for membership in the DAR through their ancestor, Dewalt Mechlin.
Ensign Mechlin was born in 1731 and enlisted in the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment of the Continental Line on April 9, 1776. In 1777, he served under Colonel Aeneas Mackey and Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Brodhead.
Mechlin was among the five hundred men stationed at the blockhouse in Bound Brook, New Jersey. On the night of April 13, 1777, a British force of 4,000 under Charles Cornwallis caught the sleeping Continentals by surprise. Many of the men escaped, but more than one hundred were killed or captured. Mechlin was severely wounded in the attack and later returned home.
Founded in 1890, the Dewalt Mechlin DAR Chapter of Chicago, Illinois, was named in honor of the organizing regent’s Patriot ancestor. Ensign Mechlin died on March 29, 1816, and was laid to rest in Feightner’s Cemetery in Hempfield Township, Pennsylvania.
