Clarendon man jailed after meth bust in city
A Clarendon man has been jailed on $250,000 bail as police allege he possessed a half-pound of methamphetamine with intent to sell it.
Michael J. Fitzgerald, 49, of Clarendon was charged Tuesday by Youngsville police officers with felony manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver and third-degree felony criminal use of a communication facility. Fitzgerald was arraigned by Magisterial District Court Judge Raymond Zydonik on Tuesday, with Zydonik setting bail at $250,000 cash. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 17 in front of Zydonik.
According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause filed by Youngsville police, police officers from several agencies conducted an anticipatory search warrant at 108 Beaty St., Warren, at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Youngsville police working with U.S Postal Service inspectors learned a priority mail package was being sent to the Beaty Street address to a Kevin Campbell. An inspector was able to intercept the package, which was then opened after a federal search warrant was issued for the package. Investigators opened the parcel and found two plastic bags weighing 4 ounces each of crystal methamphetamine, which was confirmed by using a TruNarc device.
Officers and agents were then able to conduct a controlled delivery of the package, which was taken inside the Beaty Street home by Campbell, according to the affidavit, at which point the search warrant was executed.
“Campbell had already taken the package inside the residence and upon law enforcement entry, in plain view, it was observed on his phone that was left open that he had messaged “Mike Fitzy.” Campbell informed law enforcement that Fitzgerald was coming to the residence to pick up the substance,” the affidavit states. ”
No charges have been filed against Campbell as of Wednesday morning, according to a search of online court information on the state court system website. The police report does list Campbell as a co-defendant.
Law enforcement then cleared the area, with several agents still inside with Campbell, when Fitzgerald arrived and was taken into custody.
“The defendant did conspire with another to possess a half-pound of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute it,” the affidavit states.
