I walked into the Warren Public Library today with no current library card and wondering if I may even have an old fine on record. I was determined to settle my account and leave with a new card. We took our grandkids to the library a month or so ago to get their cards set up and I thought it was time I did the same.
I don’t read nearly as much as I used to due to the rise of the internet and instant information. I now browse articles on my phone tailored by the algorithm to my individual interests. What could the library offer to me now? I was determined to find out.
The librarians at the front desk were very friendly and when I gave my name, the one said “Oh Jeff Haight the reporter.” That sounds weird to hear! He confirmed I was not in their system so he had me fill out a form while he started working on my new card.
His coworker, who was equally friendly, gave me a pamphlet on the services that the library offers. My one library card will work for all five county libraries. There are computers I can use. Right now I do absolutely everything from my phone. Being able to use a computer to type stories would make life a lot easier. I can then print those articles out and make copies for a small fee. That seemed convenient, instead of buying constant ink toner.
She told me about an app where I could check out thousands of e-books and e-audiobooks. You can also read magazines there. Nothing is worse than starting to read an interesting article and hitting a paywall. If I don’t want to pay for that subscription, I can read the magazine from cover to cover on the Libby app, available in the app stores on your phone. You can also enjoy the Kanopy app with your library card and stream movies, documentaries, and shows right on your phone.
There were signs advertising classes and courses offered at the library. From gardening, to budgeting, to comics, to genealogy, there was something for everybody. I saw games upstairs where families can gather around a table and enjoy a game day. Tax forms, government documents, and a micro film reader is available to cardholders to use.
For the kids, there is a fun interactive room available for them. Story time is offered at the library. Our grandkids loved picking out their own books, DVDs, and even Nintendo Switch games.
In a world where prices on everything are going up, it’s great to know that the Warren Public Library is available. The library is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. If it’s been awhile since you’ve visited the library like me, take some time and “check out” what they have to offer.
