Taking root: Community Collaborates on Greenhouse Project
Robby Hart of the Allegheny Greenhouse group and Sandra Blum of Bee Courageous at Garden Grub are pictured here at the Allegheny Valley Veterans Center, located in Clarendon. The former school’s hallway is in full bloom with a greenhouse project.
It’s time to get growing.
On Saturday, April 25 a Kids Container Workshop will be at the Allegheny Valley Veterans Center in Clarendon, Pa., from 8 a.m. to noon. Pre-registration and pre-payment of $10 per child is required for children 3 years old and up to come and plant starter flower, herb and/or vegetable plants in a cute planter box in time for Mother’s Day.
The deadline to register is Friday, April 24.
This is the first of many fundraisers for the Allegheny Greenhouse Project. The group has joined forces with Penn Soil Research Conservation & Development Council to build new greenhouses for the Allegheny Greenhouse senior citizens.
Bee Courageous will help run the greenhouses while utilizing the greenhouses for their mentoring program as well as collaborate on educational and community events with Penn Soil RC&D. The greenhouses will be built on a parcel of land at the Rouse Estates — the fourth major partner on this project. This project has been in the works over the past year and will also benefit the residents of the Rouse Estates, adding to the activities available for them to participate in on a daily basis.
Adults can pre-register and pay for their children to attend this event on the Penn Soil RC&D website at www.pennsoil.org on the Shop page by selecting the icon on the Shop page for the Kids Container Workshop Pre-registration.
In-person pre-registeration and payment can be done at the Penn Soil RC&D office located at the Warren County Conservation District Building at 4000 Conewango Ave., Warren. A parent or guardian must accompany and stay with their children during the event. It will be open to the first 60 children registered. There will be additional activities happening during the event.
In addition, hanging baskets and garden hoses will also be for sale between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., benefitting the Allegheny Greenhouse group and Bee Courageous. Cash, check or card will be accepted. Questions can be directed to Sue Nielsen or Sherry Moore at Penn Soil RC&D by calling 814-726-1441.
