The Silver Winds Flute Choir celebrates spring with a free concert titled “Birds Butterflies, Blooms and Blues” on Sunday, April 12, at 4 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church, 109 W. Third Ave., Warren.

The performance includes classical, popular and contemporary selections with pieces that represent the arrival of spring. Bird songs are often the first clue that spring is arriving with flowers and butterflies following soon after. Compositions by Dvorak, Vivaldi, and more will be performed. Helen’s Backyard, a contemporary piece, musically and humorously illustrates a day in spring. Each short musical statement represents the happenings in Helen’s backyard from sunrise to sunset.

Additional program selections include W.C. Handy’s Saint Louis Blues, Blue Moon, Basin Street Blues, When the Saints Come Marching In and Blue Skies.

The Silver Winds Flute Choir formed with a core group of five members and presented its first concert in December 2007. Since that time the group has performed annual spring and winter concerts. Silver Winds also performs for nursing home residents and at special events throughout the county.

“Our flute choir membership has fluctuated from five to 10 players,” said . Rebecca Darbee, coordinator of the group. “We are fortunate to have nine players now who are excited about playing together. We enjoy the friendships we make through music, and we love sharing our music with our community”

The players range from amateur to professionally trained players, all sharing a love of flute and flute music. Larger groups allow members to incorporate all the many flutes into the selections for a performance. The choir will use the C-flute, the alto, and bass flute for this season’s performance.
