Local nurse retires after career throughout the region

A local nurse whose dedicated profession in the medical field over the past 4 decades, has recently retired.
Lora Huey Gibb, proud graduate and 1976 class officer of Warren Area High School, began her academic journey at West Virginia University before transferring to Clemson University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and became a CNOR (Certified Perioperative Nurse).
Her lifelong commitment to healthcare began as a young girl working at the Barley Nursing Home in North Warren, just across the street from where she grew up. Over a remarkable career spanning more than 40 years, Gibb served as an operating room nurse at several Pittsburgh hospitals, including UPMC Presbyterian, St. Clair Hospital, and the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. She ultimately returned to her hometown, joining Warren General Hospital and coming full circle to continue her service where it all began.
Throughout her career, Gibb worked alongside world-class surgeons, assisting in complex procedures and life-changing organ transplants. At the VA, she was promoted to Nurse Educator, where she oversaw nearly 100 staff members and medical students, sharing her knowledge and experience with future generations of nurses. During the COVID-19 surge, she played a vital role in improving patient entrance and screening processes, and participated in high-risk, life-saving airway procedures that protected both patients and medical staff. Service also includes president of the Pittsburgh chapter of AORN (Association of Operating Room Nurses), a professional organization of over 40,000 members of operating room nurses.
=Gibb served as a delegate at their annual national congress numerous times. She often said one of the most rewarding parts of her career was caring for our nation’s veterans.
Career highlights include being a member of Dr. Starzl’s surgical team at UPMC Presbyterian. Starzl is the father of transplant surgery. Gibb was also a team leader of a busy cardiac, thoracic and vascular services at St Clair Health just outside of Pittsburgh.
Gibb has a son, Robert who resides in Pittsburgh, working as a content marketer for Hewlett Packard and is also a screenwriter. Daughter Trish and son-in-law Brad live in the Philadelphia area working in finance and Samsung marketing. Gibb’s 2 grandchildren.
Plans for retirement include enjoying her home in Warren, boating in the summers and of course traveling far and wide but especially to visit her two grandchildren in Philadelphia.
Gibb was recently congratulated on her outstanding career of dedication and service. She is thankful to family, friends and co-workers that helped celebrate her with a surprise retirement luncheon saying it was an honor to end her career with a wonderful group of professionals.
