Unity Quilt sews celebration of America’s 250th
Imagine a quilt consisting of 70 panels, each one three feet high and six feet wide. That would be impressive to see. The Unity Quilt Project right in Pennsylvania is planning just that and residents can help make it happen.
The project is inviting all 67 counties in Pennsylvania as well as what they call three capital cities, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and Lancaster to each craft their own panel celebrating their own contributions to democracy. These panels will then all be sewn together in a ceremony in Harrisburg on Sunday, Oct. 11, honoring the 250th anniversary of American democracy.
The Unity Quilt Project draws inspiration from AIDS Memorial Quilt, first displayed on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 11, 1987. That quilt became a symbol of hope and remembrance, bringing communities across the country together to honor and grieve.
Pennsylvania, a state pivotal in the founding of our democracy, is the perfect place to celebrate democracy’s past, present, and future. Each panel should reflect how each county contributes to democracy, using past events, notable leaders, or community organizations as inspiration.
Laura Quick, lead organizer of the project, stated she has not spoken with anyone from Warren County yet. “We have divided Pennsylvania into six regions and Warren County is part of the Northwest Region.”
Until a Northwest Regional Coordinator, Quick will serve as a point of contact for the project. If you are reading this from a surrounding county, Quick would also like to speak with you about getting involved.
If residents are a quilter and interested in participating in this project, Quick can be reached by phone at 717-473-3356 or via email at unityquiltproject@gmail.com.
