Students from Beaty-Warren Middle School, Sheffield Area Elementary/Middle School, Youngsville Elementary/Middle School and Warren Area Elementary Center recently showcased their math skills in the National Fall Noetic Math Contest, an online, nationwide competition for elementary and middle school students.

The Noetic Learning Math Contest is designed to spark students’ interest in mathematics, strengthen problem-solving skills, and inspire future success in STEM fields. Students compete individually within their grade-level divisions, solving 20 creative and challenging math problems independently during the testing window, which ran from Nov. 13 to 27.

This fall, 33,223 students participated nationwide. Of those, 3,552 earned placement on the National Honor Roll, ranking in the top 10 percent, while 13,841 students received National Honorable Mention recognition, placing in the top 50 percent. Each school’s top scorer also received a Team Winner award.

Several other Beaty students earned National Honorable Mention recognition, including fifth-grader Draedon Gnage, who placed first in his division. “Try things even if you think you might not be successful,” Gnage said. “I didn’t think I would do as well, but I did.”

At Sheffield Area Elementary/Middle School, fourth-grader Toby Leichtenberger earned Team Winner honors and a National Honorable Mention. “I liked the challenge of hard math problems,” Leichtenberger said. “I was shocked I did so well.”

Youngsville Elementary/Middle School students also performed strongly, with multiple Team Winners and Honorable Mentions. Fourth-grader Parker Chase said, “It was fun and it was very challenging,” while fifth-grader Braelyn Kent, a first-place finisher, added, “It was the hardest thing ever, but my brain did not combust into a million pieces.”

At Warren Area Elementary Center, students in grades two through four earned top placements and national recognition. Fourth-grader Dylan Anderson, a first-place finisher and National Honorable Mention recipient, said, “I felt happy that I won 1st place. I had fun. The questions are pretty hard and I hope to do the contest again!”

The district has participated in the Noetic Math Contest for the past four years, and educators continue to praise students for their dedication and perseverance.

“We are incredibly proud of all our mathletes who studied, practiced and challenged themselves,” Brown said.

The district will participate in another Noetic Math Contest this spring. Additional upcoming academic competitions include the Challenge 24 contest and the K’NEX STEM Design Competition, both hosted by IU5, with a county-level Challenge 24 event planned before regional competition.
