Students, group help with ‘Valentines for Veterans’
Photos submitted to the Times Observer At left Teacher Michelle Buccardo is pictured with her class from Tidioute Community Charter School presenting valentines to Doris Svitek, VFW Auxiliary. The school also collected donations for the Troop Box Program. At right Blue Star Mothers of Kinzua PA203 delivered a valentine to veteran Pete Beichner, a resident at the Crary Home.
While Valentine’s Day may be celebrated by most and still others do not take it seriously these days, it can be a painful reminder for many, in particular military spouses, active duty service members, and their families.
It brings the reality of a sustained separation and all the feelings that may come with that during any holiday.
“Valentines for Veterans,” is the week of Feb 14th, and also a National Salute to Veterans. Expressing love and gratitude, students at the Tidioute Community Charter School shared their appreciation to Veterans. A total of 305 valentines will be given to the Veterans of the Pennsylvania Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home in Erie, Pa. The Valentines for Veterans is a part of the VFW Auxiliary’s Hospital Program.
The Blue Star Mothers of Kinzua PA 203 have recently delivered personal care bags and other Valentine’s Day treats to 6 area assisted living and nursing homes. In addition, this year 140 balloons were bought by Family Dollar customers to give out as well.
Wearing red is not something we can do just for Valentine’s Day. In fact, wearing red is what many of the Blue Star Mothers do every Friday. “RED (Remember Everyone Deployed) Friday” is a way to show love and support to our troops by wearing red for the brave men and women who are currently deployed around the world.
