Dave Manning, Industrial Arts shop instructor, said students had to build a project in which they knew what it was, going into the competition but not what welds to make on it. They have to know print reading, the welding processes, teamwork and time management. Students are given a little less than two hours to complete their project.
“It teaches them about teamwork, perseverance, endurance and dependence on one another,” Manning said. “It is always a really positive atmosphere for everybody. They go down, they have fun. The Steamfitters is a fantastic group that treats the SkillsUSA people very well.”
Steamfitters Local 449 supplies trained, certified professionals to support projects in healthcare, energy, commercial, and industrial sectors. It offers programs to accommodate skill levels as well as apprenticeship opportunities. Visit ua449.com for more information.
The TCCS welding shop also custom fabricated a firepit and grill that will be given away at the school Technology Department’s online spring raffle. Chances are $5 each. All proceeds benefit materials and tools in the shop classroom. Chances can be bought at https://tinyurl.com/2eszken4.
