Shoplifting incident leads to drug charges
An alleged shoplifting incident at Walmart has led to drug charges against a Sheffield man.
Lorn Champlin Jr., 40, was charged with two counts of felony manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, two counts of intentional possession of a controlled substance by a person not registered, use/possession of drug paraphernalia, retail theft – taking merchandise and marijuana possession – small amount, personal use on Monday by Conewango Township police. Champlin Jr. was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Daniel Miller on Tuesday and taken to the Warren County Jail on $50,000 bail. A preliminary hearing will be held Feb. 25.
According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, an officer was leaving the Walmart store on Market Street when he was told a man who had already been identified and contacted by store employees and Conewango Township police for retail theft in late January was in the store’s parking lot. That man, Jeffrey Brunecz, 52, of Sheffield, was charged with defiant trespass.
Brunecz, the affidavit states, is known to associate with Champlin Jr., who store employees found inside the Walmart store at the time. Champlin Jr. allegedly went past the final point of sale and left the store, causing the theft monitoring devices on items he was carrying to sound an alarm. Champlin Jr. allegedly got into his truck, which is when store employees notified a Conewango Township police officer. The officer pulled the truck over near Starbucks. Champlin Jr. allegedly told the officer he may not have paid for a prescription. Inside a prescription bag, according to the affidavit, were several other items that hadn’t been paid for with a value of around $100. The officer said Champlin Jr. was also in possession of a backpack that allegedly contained 11.4 grams of methamphetamine, 19.5 bars or tablets of Alprazolam, a Schedule 4 controlled substance, a digital scale with white residue and several baggies. Champlin also allegedly had containers, pipes, baggies, straws, metal pieces, a hypodermic needle, alcohol wipes, THC wax and a small amount of marijuana.
“Based on my training, education and experience, this amount of substance is more than a user amount of a controlled substance and the items found with the substance are indicative of sale of the substances,” the affidavit states.
