Northern Pennsylvania Regional College will offer an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course beginning in February, introducing a new learning format designed to increase accessibility and flexibility for students across the region.

The EMT cohort will run from Feb. 16 through July 1 and spans 18 weeks. The program combines online instruction, in-person lab work, and field and clinical experience, allowing learners to complete coursework at their own pace while scheduling labs and clinical requirements.

The course is divided into three sections: didactic instruction, lab sessions, and field and clinical work. The didactic portion is scheduled from Feb. 16 through April 18 and will include online sessions with an instructor as well as recorded sessions. Lab sessions will take place from April 20 through May 30, followed by field and clinical experience from June 1 through June 30. Learners may register for lab shifts based on their availability and may attend any lab site within the college’s 10-county service area.

The total cost of the EMT program is $775, and those interested must be at least 16 years old to enroll. Required clearances to become an EMT are not included in the cost and must be obtained separately. Payment plans are available for students who need assistance financing the course. Prospective students must complete a pre-registration process that includes an entrance exam and submission of required clearances.

The program covers a range of emergency medical topics, including patient assessment, airway management, cardiac arrest response, patient immobilization, diabetic emergencies, strokes and seizures and the emergency response system. The curriculum also includes an obstetrics and pediatrics section.

Required lab sessions allow students to demonstrate competency in psychomotor skills, complete testing requirements, and prepare for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians certification exam. The college reports an exam pass rate of approximately 90 percent, exceeding the national average.

The college also plans to offer another EMT course later in 2026, and pre-registration materials may be carried over to a future cohort if needed.

Recent findings show a need for additional Emergency Medical Technicians throughout the state. Not only do emergency services face a serious financial crisis, there is a dire situation to recruit first responders and ensure their health.

The state’s inaction, combined with mounting demands, leaves firefighters frustrated. Emergency workers scale back their voluntary commitments or quit for easier jobs with higher pay. Many of them suffer from PTSD and health problems. Suicide rates eclipse the general population.

Additional information and pre-registration details are available through the college’s website.

Starting at $3.50/week.
