Warrin’ Wrecking Dolls team stays strong in region
The Warrin’ Wrecking Dolls is a sports organization for competitive roller derby, the region’s own flat-track roller derby team. It’s full of women, many of whom are moms who thought they couldn’t find the time, couldn’t skate, felt too old or too nervous. It’s where empowerment meets community by stepping out or “rolling” out to do difficult things that test limits and bring a sense of pride through strength.
Strength not only in the physical but also in mental health capacity and in friendships and fans of the community. The sport combines speed, strategy, and strength. The Wrecking Dolls train two to three days a week, balancing the demands of work and family life with their passion for the sport. Striving to improve individual athleticism, self-discipline and character is what the team is all about, meanwhile promoting team unity. The program provides structured training, instruction, and competition, preparing members to represent Northwestern Pennsylvania and Southwestern New York at a regional level.
But what exactly is roller derby? Two teams of skaters skating around a track, scoring points and throwing hits. It’s strategic chaos at its best. And the team players are full of big personalities and team spirit. Their wild derby names are earned. First, there is a jammer, the one with a star on her helmet, who scores points by passing opposing skaters while the rest of the team are called blockers, trying to stop the other team’s jammer and to protect their own. A bout can last about two hours.
This is not a free-for-all game. Skaters get sent to the penalty box for things like elbows, trips, blocks to the back or going out of bounds and re-entering illegally. The penalty is 30 seconds in the box, leaving the team with one less player for that time being. It’s family friendly and kids under 12 are free admission. This sport is full contact, with hard hitting action that is not staged.
Since forming in 2015, the Wrecking Dolls have brought fast-paced action and strong community spirit to Northwest Pennsylvania and Western New York. Competing in bouts across the region, the ladies represent their hometown pride both on and off the track. The team travels all over and teams also travel here. Some places include Rochester, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Marlynd, Olean, and Erie, just to name a few.
Hank and Amylynn Delgado started the team after being originally from Tennessee, where they had started a team down there as well. It takes lots of time and just getting the word out there, slowly building up a fan base is important. Right now the coaches for the team include Hanks Delgado, Justin Ross, Shane Thor while the team President is Tabitha Ross, Vice President is Natasha Sundquist, Secretary is Danielle Thor, and Treasurer is Grace Dennis. Hope Smith handles events and Tasha Hammerbeck handles membership. Several other team members as well as community volunteers help make this all possible. A 10-year anniversary celebration at their last derby bout was held in August. This was a way to show a special thank you to the Delgados for keeping it going these past 10 years.
“We’re not just teammates — we’re friends, co-workers, moms, and neighbors,” the team says. “Roller derby gives us a space to challenge ourselves, support each other, and give back to the community we love.” The dolls were recently in the Jamestown Christmas parade and also celebrated at their first annual Christmas party together.
The team wrapped up their Derby Bootcamp on Nov. 19, but the DFF (Derby Fit Fitness) continues every Wednesday through March. DFF is a skating-based fitness and introduction program held at the Russell Roller Rink from 6:15 to 8 p.m. It’s perfect for anyone interested in joining the team or just looking to get out and experience the derby community.
The 2026 season will kick off on Wednesday, with practices from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. A bout schedule will be out after the new year. Beyond competition, the Wrecking Dolls are deeply committed to giving back. At each bout, they select a local cause to support through their Chuck-a-duck fundraiser, and they also attend many community events. They are always looking for new places in the community to attend as far as events and help out. They always pick a local charity to give back to at their bouts. Some in the past have included the Chautauqua County Humane society and the Special Olympics.
The Dolls are looking for new skaters and referees. If you cannot skate, do not worry, the dolls will teach you! Join them on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. at Russell Roller Rink (Cost: $6) to learn all about roller derby, meet the Warrin’ Wrecking Dolls and try skating in a fun, supportive environment. Equipment will be provided — just wear comfortable clothes.
