St. Joseph’s Blue Tape Mural open on Sunday

Pictured is the 2025 mural with a Noah’s Ark theme.

The fourth annual Blue Painter’s Tape Mural is underway at the St. Joseph Catholic School.

Two hundred students that attend the school in ages that range from the 3-year-old preschool class up to the school’s sixth grade class have been involved in its creation.

St. Joseph’s art teacher Cindy Kaemmerer said she has enjoyed pulling off the project for the past four years. Typically done just in time for the school’s open house, this year is no different. Students are utilizing fine motor skills, dexterity, teamwork and art appreciation to create the mural. Kaemmerer shared that the planning process begins with discussions about the theme just before Christmas and the mural is completed in about three weeks.

The 56 foot long by 8 foot tall mural is large and detailed, with no stencils or drawings on the wall, the students manipulate the tape to create their work in large scale form, all by eye.

Students work during regular art class time, as well as some choosing to work after eating lunch, and still some choose to work after school. The fourth grade class comments included,

St. Joseph Catholic School students are currently finishing their mural using blue tape as the only medium for artwork. Carefully and creatively placed on the walls of the school’s gym, the mural is available for viewing in time for the school’s open house this Sunday.

“We look forward to the Blue Tape Project every year,” and “it’s hard work but fun work.” Students say it is their favorite project and that they like working with the whole school.

Every year they choose a different theme. The past has included dinosaurs, under the sea and Noah’s Ark.

This year the theme is “Art Museum” meaning that students are reproducing 17 world famous works of art ranging from a Jackson Pollack to a Leonardo da Vinci. Tape was donated this year by Lowe’s.

St Joe’s welcomes the public to visit the mural this Sunday during its open house from noon to 1 p.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
