School Board discusses rotating meeting sites
The Warren County School District may be taking its show on the road.
Board members recently discussed rotating meetings at sites throughout the district in an attempt to make the public more aware of what’s happening in the district. Board member Misty Moore, who was sworn in earlier in the meeting, mentioned the possibility of rotating the board meetings in and around the district after making it a campaign issue during the spring and fall. Acknowledging that there are technology challenges in doing that, Moore still urged the board to explore the possibilities of making that happen.
“Do we know what those technology challenges are,” asked board member Tammy Holden.
Superintendent Gary Weber described the logistics and investment of having the meetings available via Zoom and suggested asking the public what it wants.
“We put a lot of time and effort into this room to try to make sure that we can put out to the public the Zoom meeting,” Weber said. “If we go on the road, I can’t take all this equipment with us and that might negate us from being able to do that. So it wouldn’t be the first time that we’ve done the board meetings out at the schools but it’s been probably 20 plus years that we’ve done that and you know you can go back and look and probably see why they stopped doing it to begin with. But my recommendation is, if that’s what you really want to do, because of the Zoom nature and a lot of people logging in wanting to view it via zoom, my recommendation is that we put something out to the public to try and find out, survey the public to see what they prefer, and then we can make a decision based on that, rather than just assuming because, I think there are a lot of people that like to attend on Zoom.”
Weber recommended that the public be surveyed since attendance can be done via Zoom. The dates and times for the upcoming meetings were approved, but the locations will be discussed during a future school board meeting. Board member John Wortman pointed out mileage costs to the administration’s attendance to meetings outside of the normal central office building will have to be paid while Moore said public comments had been taken away from those watching the meetings via Zoom this year. She said there have been people that have not been able to physically attend the school board meetings in parts of the county who can log onto Zoom, but don’t have a voice in the meetings. Moore said she would like to give them the opportunity to participate again.
Board member Bridget Schwab agreed that Weber’s idea to survey the public should be done.
