New Year’s celebrations bring drunk driving safety reminder
As the holiday season comes to an end, officials are reminding drivers to stay safe on the roads, warning that the number of drunk driving deaths often increases during this time of year.
In addition to heavier traffic, winter weather can create hazardous driving conditions, making safe choices even more important.
Drivers are encouraged to prepare for snow, ice and reduced visibility, which can make impaired driving even more dangerous.
“We want people to know that it is never safe to get behind the wheel of a car while under the influence of drugs or alcohol,” said Saxon Daugherty, PennDOT safety press officer.
Authorities are urging people to plan ahead before attending New Year’s gatherings. Options for a safe ride home include having a sober friend or family member drive, using public transportation, or relying on rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft.
“There are a lot of options out there,” Daugherty emphasized, “but one that is never acceptable is getting behind the wheel impaired.”
