SCANDIA – Over the past 90 years, the little store in Scandia has changed owners as well as names.
It is now known as the Scandia Country Market, still located at 3801 Cole Hill Road, Russell. Rebekah Casey Rothermel, a native of Warren County, along with her husband, Andrew Rothermel are the 10th owners of the space. They moved into the apartment attached to the back of the store in early 2020, not knowing what the future could bring due to the pandemic. Dr. David Brook, who used to own the building, mentioned the possibility to the Rothermels to purchase the whole building.
The Rothermels said they became excited at the prospects for the store at the time, and after two years of praying, they decided to buy the building in 2023. Taking over the store meant remodeling and changing the name. When they decided to purchase the store, it was in hopes that it would be just as successful as it was in previous years when others have owned it. They remain hopeful and full of ideas for the store’s progress.
Standing the test of time, the Scandia Country Market stands on the four corners of Scandia and opened in October 2024. The Rothermels started serving food and pizza in May 2025.
“It’s definitely been quite a process but we have had some amazing supporters, lots of items, and a great community,” Rothermel said.
The store carries local goods such as Amish baked goods, honey, apple cider, egg nog and more. Creating and testing out new recipes along with their own family recipes, they make and sell their own cinnamon rolls and bacon balls. In addition, vendors from Warren County and the Jamestown area add a special touch to the shopping experience. Several home-made products are available, from handmade greeting cards to jewelry to 3D printed items and salves.
The Rothermels want to stay open throughout the winter, though winter hours are decreased. They are trying to accommodate local Scandia residents and customers as they offer their services. Their goal is to be helpful and support the public as best they can. The store is known for the PBR (pickle bacon ranch) pizza, and the Rothermels kept that and other pizzas on their menu, but will also have soup bowls and other warm comfort food. They carry locally sourced foods, such as Pot of Gold Milk products which can only be found in just a few locations within the county.
