Clarendon man charged after flag football fight
A Clarendon man has been flagged by Warren city police officers for a first-degree felony after what witnesses saw was a violent hit during a flag football game Oct. 19.
Andrew Kerr, 31, was charged Sunday with first-degree felony aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment by city police officers. Bail was set at $50,000 by Magisterial District Judge Todd Woodin at preliminary arraignment on Sunday.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 19According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, a woman contacted police on behalf of her husband who had been playing in a non-contact flag football game. During the first half of the game, Kerr and the unnamed other player had an altercation during which Kerr allegedly accused the other man of making a comment. Witnesses, including the unnamed man’s wife, say nothing was said and tried to explain that to Kerr. Later in the second half of the game, Kerr allegedly hit the man in the face, causing serious bodily injury.
The referee of the game said the hit was intentional and had nothing to do with the game, allegedly taking place three or four seconds after the play had ended and 20 to 25 yards away from the ball. The flag football league director also told police the incident was intentional and was unnecessary. The league director ejected Kerr, who then allegedly tried to start a fight with the league director.
“The victim was taken to the Warren General Hospital emergency room,” the affidavit states. “Medical records of the victim showed a fracture of the left mandibular angle, a fracture of the left side of the mandibular body and the jaw was dislocated. Due to the severity of the injuries, the victim was transferred to Hamot Hospital for surgery evaluation and treatment.”
