Kalbfus Rod & Gun Club game commission grant

Members of the Kalbfus Club, located on Chapman Dam road, received a grant from the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The grant money, awarded in December 2024, was recently released after the project was completed and approved. The story is also featured in the latest edition of Big Game News.

The state Game Commission is helping improve trap shooting equipment at an area rod and gun club.

Representatives of the Pennsylvania Game Commission recently approved the installation of 14 new traps on the Kalbfus Rod & Gun Club’s sporting clays course. The traps were purchased with a $30,000 grant provided by the Game Commission.

Dave Mitchell, state Game Commission deputy director of field operations, and Luke Johnson, state Game Commission shooting sports range management coordinator, traveled from Harrisburg to the Kalbfus Rod & Gun Club located 2.6 miles from Clarendon, recently.

The grant was awarded through a competitive application process open to clubs across the state. Clubs in each Game Commission region were invited to apply. Grants ranged from a maximum of $30,000 for a “Tier 1” project to $250,000 and up for a “Tier 3” project. 2024 was a pilot year for Tier1 grants with a maximum of $30,000.

“We were very fortunate to receive a grant from the Pennsylvania Game Commission,” noted Ed McCullough, Kalbfus Board member, who applied for the grant. “The application covered all aspects of Kalbfus Rod and Gun Club operations, even though the grant was intended for the sporting clays course.”

Kalbfus Rod and Gun Club focuses primarily on shooting sports with a 50 and 100 yard pistol and rifle range, two lighted trap fields, skeet and five stand, along with a 20-station sporting clays course.

The club sponsors the Warren Area High School Trap Team, as well as teams that compete in adult trap leagues and a winter sporting clays league. The club also hosts hunter/trapper education courses, as well as sight-in days prior to the opening day of rifle deer hunting season. Most shooting events are open to the public, although the club is also used for private events.
