Gilbert: campaign will continue ‘with respect’

Mayor David Wortman’s opponent in Tuesday’s election is sharing his well-wishes with Wortman and his family after hearing Wortman has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
Wortman is running for re-election on the Nov. 4 ballot against Phil Gilbert, a sitting City Council member who is running as an independent. Wortman said he and his wife decided to make the diagnosis public so that the public was fully informed before going to the ballot box next week.
“Upon hearing the news of Mayor Wortman’s diagnosis of multiple myeloma, my first and only thought is for David, his wife, and his entire family,” Gilbert said. “While we are engaged in a competitive race for the future of Warren, some things are bigger than politics. Cancer is a terrible disease that touches nearly every family in our community, and I have personally witnessed the incredible strength it takes to fight it. I am sending my sincere and heartfelt best wishes to Mayor Wortman for a successful treatment, a full recovery, and peace and strength for his family during this challenging time. I urge all citizens of Warren to join me in keeping him in their thoughts and prayers.”
Wortman said in his statement that all indications from his medical team are that Wortman will be able to continue my professional work and will feel better with each treatment. Wortman said he and his wife felt it was important voters know the truth to help dispel rumors about his health.
“As many of you know I am an intensely private person and making the decision to make this public announcement was difficult,” Wortman said. “With an election right around the corner, Jennifer and I feel that you as the voting public should be aware. It is not my intent to influence your decision regarding your vote with this announcement but rather enable you to make an informed decision.”
Gilbert, for his part, said he will continue campaigning in the final few days before Tuesday’s election – but that campaign will focus on ideas and policy.
“The campaign will, of course, continue, but I want to be clear: I will conduct my campaign with the utmost respect and focus on the important issues facing Warren, ensuring our debate remains centered on policy and leadership,” Gilbert said.
