Council member John Barbera resigns

The resignation of Warren City Councilman John D. Barbera has been accepted.

The council held a special meeting Monday. Effective Oct. 1, Barbera’s resignation leaves a vacancy that, when filled, will be held until the expiration of the remainder of.Barbera’s term on December 31, 2027.

In a three page letter Barbera reflected on his time serving as a council member with gratitude while looking forward to “new horizons” awaiting him in Nashville, Tenn.

“This transition is motivated by proximity to loved ones, and the chance to explore fresh cultural and professional landscapes.” Barbera wrote. “Warren’s sense of community, natural beauty, and rich history have provided a foundation for my growth and have become integral to my identity.”

Reflecting on his tenure Barbera said “I am proud to have contributed to a number of initiatives that have moved our city forward.” Grateful for the role he played in strengthening Warren’s infrastructure and improving the community’s quality of life saying “Each step forward was a testament to the dedication of our staff and the active participation of our citizens.”

“I wish to express my sincerest appreciation to my fellow council members for their collegiality, wisdom, and perseverance” Barbera wrote. “Warren is fortunate to have such a skilled and caring workforce, and I am confident that your continued efforts will help our city thrive in the years ahead. I am confident that the next representative will bring fresh ideas and energy to the position and will serve the people of Warren with honor.”

City of Warren residents interested in being considered for appointment to fill the vacant seat through Jan. 4, 2027, are invited to submit a letter of interest and resume which are to be submitted to Teena Leary, assistant city clerk, 318 West Third Avenue, Warren, PA 16365, or via email to admin@cityofwarrenpa.gov. All materials must be received by noon on Thursday, Oct. 16, and will be forwarded to council members for their review. Late submissions will not be accepted. In accordance with the Home Rule Charter, a candidate must have been a resident of the city of Warren for one consecutive year and must be a registered voter of the municipality.

Council will meet in regular session on Monday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. in the council’s chambers in the Municipal Building, 318 W. Third Ave., Warren. An appointment to fill Barbera’s position is expected to be made during the meeting. Prospective candidates may, but are not required to, attend the Oct. 20 council meeting to address the council.
