Knights of Columbus donation honors area native’s mission

Louis Mascaro spent a lifetime making a difference that continues three years after the Warren native’s passing.
The Knights of Columbus Council 964 recently donated $5,000 to Hospice of Warren County for the Schorman Center, a branch of Hospice. The Schorman Center provides services and counseling to children that have lost fathers, mothers, siblings and other relatives. The donation was made possible through the Louis Mascaro Trust.
A member of the Knights of Columbus, Mascaro deeply respected its mission in helping the community.
The Mascaro fund has become a regular presence in the community. In January, the Warren Council Knights of Columbus made a $500 donation to the Eagles Club of Warren for use in the Eagles’ Shoes and Boots program. The Knights of Columbus donation came from the Lou Mascaro Memorial Fund. The Eagles Club annually donates vouchers to local children needing shoes and boots, in 2024 the club provided more than 250 vouchers. A November 2024 donation from the local Knights of Columbus council presented a check for $500 from the Lou Mascaro Fund for the Salvation Army’s use for additional coats after making a donation of eight cases of coats to the Salvation Army in Warren.
Mascaro graduated from Warren High School in 1959. He earned his B.S. Degree in teaching from Lock Haven University and his M.S. Degree from Ithaca College. His passion for playing football began with the Warren Dragons and he played through college.
After his college graduation he played semi-professional football with the Maryland Frederick Falcons. He led his team to a championship win as a quarterback.
Mascaro lived and raised his family in Red Hook, N. Y.. He retired from the Hyde Park (N.Y.) Central School District teaching elementary school physical education. After teaching, Mascaro worked in disadvantaged youth programs in Kingston, N.Y., and Mt. Dora, Fla. In 2022, a community garden was established in his honor in West Springfield, Mass. Memory Lane Garden was designed in conjunction with the local senior center, to provide an activity for caregivers and loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia.
