Minor’s work is inspired by her new journey in motherhood. Previously, Minor focused on photography of land use in Western New York. Three years ago, the birth of her first child changed her life and her artwork. She began to think about the historical role of women, which often took place in the background and in the shadow of others. Minor covers the faces of the women in these late 19th and early 20th century photos with planets and moons in our solar system to accentuate the mystery behind both. By blending digital and analog photography techniques with an old-fashioned cyanotype solution using Potassium ferricyanide and Ferric ammonium, Minor creates Prussian blue images that will provoke contemplation about women’s roles in history and society.
Kendall’s focus stays earthbound and three-dimensional in her stereo photography of Pennsylvania’s landscapes. Kendall’s love of the outdoors is partially due to her grandparents, who took her on Sunday drives. She was enthralled by the richness of Pennsylvania’s natural vistas. Moved by these childhood experiences, Kendall will often revisit previous stereo-view locations to explore past and present natural legacies. Using stereo photography, the technique that involves taking two photos of the same scene from slightly different angles to create a three-dimensional illusion, Kendall creates interactive images that draw the viewer into the scene.
An opening reception for both exhibits will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday will feature artist talks and is open to the public.
Through Nov. 2 the exhibition is open to visitors on Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free. The Crary Art Gallery acknowledges funding support from the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts from the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts.
