In anticipation of America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, Gov. Josh Shapiro and PennDOT have introduced a patriotic new license plate–“Let Freedom Ring”–celebrating Pennsylvania’s pivotal role as the birthplace of American democracy.
Unveiled in June and now available to Pennsylvanians, the enhanced design features the iconic Liberty Bell and the slogan “Let Freedom Ring” in bold red and blue lettering against a clean, off-white backdrop.
The fresh look has already struck a chord–nearly 12,000 plates have been distributed to residents who signed up for early access.
“Pennsylvania is the birthplace of American freedom–and ahead of 2026, Pennsylvanians can ‘Let Freedom Ring’ all across our Commonwealth with one of our new license plates,” Shapiro said. .
Shapiro’s announcement included visuals of Pennsylvania’s sports mascots–such as the Phillie Phanatic and Pittsburgh’s Gritty–sporting the new plates. Currently, only drivers who completed an early-access request last summer can order the plates. PennDOT plans to expand availability soon, allowing anyone with standard or personalized plates to order the new design online. Specialty or organizational plates will also transition to feature the updated design in the coming months.
The “Let Freedom Ring” plate complements Pennsylvania’s tourism initiative, “The Great American Getaway.” The design aims to foster state pride and support efforts to attract millions of visitors leading up to Independence Day 250 celebrations. Switching to the new design is optional for Pennsylvania drivers. Current plate holders can keep their existing tags, while newcomers and renewal applicants can choose the festive 250th-anniversary design. Personalized options remain available–with fees varying by style and customizations.
Visit pa.gov/licenseplate for step-by-step ordering. Select “Let Freedom Ring” under standard or personalized plate options. Special-issue plates will be updated with the new design over the next several months.
