The event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 16 at the Brokenstraw Fish and Game Club on Mead Run Road, Youngsville. To memorialize Brent McKown (1935-2001) the Learn To Fish program was begun to preserve and pass on Mr. McKown’s love of the great outdoors and enjoyment of teaching children to fish. Growing up in Tidioute and living in Warren County his entire life Mr. McKown fished all over Warren and Chautauqua counties. An avid troller he enjoyed sharing in and teaching his sons, family members and friends to fish.
Open to ages 2-15 children must be accompanied by an adult to participate and all are encouraged to dress appropriately for being outdoors and near water by wearing boots. Sunscreen and bug spray will be must have’s as well. With a start time of 8 a.m. and after a free breakfast, anglers will gear up and with instruction and assistance from Derek McKown, his friends and family members.
McKown thanked the Corry Walmart and its manager who donated enough fishing equipment for 50 children. Learn To Fish day also receives donations from family members, friends, organizations and businesses. Donations, both of funding and time, are accepted.
Pre-registration for the program is required and can be done by calling Derek McKown or Pam Tidrick at 814-489-3110.
