Warren General Hospital schedules full-scale decontamination drill

Warren General Hospital will conduct a comprehensive decontamination planning meeting and full-scale drill on Thursday, July 31.

The exercise is designed to test and refine the hospital’s emergency response protocols, specifically its capabilities in managing and decontaminating individuals exposed to hazardous materials.

The drill, which will take place rain or shine, is a vital part of Warren General Hospital’s ongoing commitment to community safety and readiness for any emergency. It will involve the hospital’s specially trained Decon Team and utilize simulated chemical agents on volunteers representing both children and adults, to ensure a realistic and thorough training environment.

“The safety and well-being of our community are our highest priorities,” said Kathryn Carlson, hospital chief operating officer. “Regular, realistic drills like this one are essential to ensure our emergency teams are fully prepared to respond effectively and efficiently to any decontamination scenario. We are continually investing in the training and resources necessary to provide the highest level of care, even in the most challenging circumstances.”

Hospitals routinely conduct such exercises to improve their response capabilities to various emergencies, including incidents involving hazardous materials requiring decontamination procedures. These drills involve simulating various scenarios to test the effectiveness of their emergency plans, train staff, and coordinate with first responders and other agencies.

“Our Decon Team is a highly skilled group of professionals dedicated to protecting our patients and our community,” Carlson said. “This drill allows them to practice their precise protocols, from initial triage and lifesaving measures in the ‘hot zone’ to comprehensive full-body washing and transfer to the ‘cold zone’ for ongoing care. Every detail, down to checking vitals and ensuring proper gear, is meticulously reviewed.”
