Sidewalk closed on Liberty Street during building repairs

The sidewalk is closed on a section of Liberty street to prevent pedestrians from being hurt by bricks falling off the facade of a building on the 200 block of Liberty Street.

Concerns were brought up at the City Council meeting about a building with the facade falling off at 219 – 221 Liberty Street. It was claimed that large chunks of the facade were falling off and hitting the ground, and concerns were brought up that they could seriously hurt someone.

“You can see that section of the sidewalk has been cordoned off and there’s a walkway that’s been created here to allow pedestrians to get around that section. The city manager and I met with the owner last week. He had a lift over there and is bringing in a mason to start repointing those bricks. He does not want to take the plywood securing the facade down all at once. He would like to work on it section by section so that the bricks remain secure.” according to Randall Rossey, city codes and planning director.

Further concerns that the screws holding the plywood were rusting and not secure anymore were also brought up.

“I can verify that the plywood was put up about 10 years or so ago. The city hired a third party contractor to fix the property at that moment in time. That was temporary with the owner about two owners ago.” City Manage Mike Holtz said.

The city is working closely with the owner of the building to make sure that the repairs are completed.

Starting at $3.50/week.
