Opening of pools, petting zoos and Touch A Truck kick off as school ends

The C.A.R. Pool in Warren and the Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool in Youngsville will both celebrate their opening weekend. Both pools are open from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children at the C.A.R. Pool and $5 for adults and $4 for children at the BVSP. Seasonal passes are available for both pools.
There will be a petting zoo by Remedies Rescue and Rehoming over the weekend. The first will be at Beaty Park on Saturday, June 7, from noon to 4 p.m. The second will be on Sunday, June 8, at Lacy Park from noon to 4 p.m. There will be a mini pig, chicks, hamsters, guinea pigs and more.
The petting zoo is called Gentle Hands, Soft Futures.
“I’m hoping to be able to bring some parents together and talk about how we want to see our community changed for the better for our kids, how we can do that for them ourselves, and what we need more resources for to be able to Make our community a safer more loving environment for the children in it.” said Karissa Kostkas of Remedies Rescue and Rehoming.

Remedies Rescue and Rehoming specializes in finding new homes for unique animals, such as mini pigs, fancy mice, chinchillas and other less common pets.
Touch a Truck with the Jefferson Defrees Family Center will take place at Betts Park on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a special VIP hour from 9 to 10 a.m. The VIP hour costs $10 and will have first access to trucks as well as a BMX stunt show with Dialed Action Sports at 9:15 a.m. Admission after 10 a.m. is by donation, with donations helping pay for summer field trips for the Jefferson Defrees Family Center and books for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. The Defrees Center pays for free books to go to roughly 850 local children under age 5 each month through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, according to Jennifer Madigan, event coordinator.
Vehicles will include race cars, farm tractors, a parachute ultralight, ambulance, police cars, dump trucks, 18 wheelers, garbage truck, bus, fire trucks and more.
While trucks are the main attraction, there are a lot of other activities happening, including:
– 9 to 11 a.m., Erie Zoo STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities

– 9 to 11:30 a.m., Paint a Car. For $1, children can use a squirt gun to paint a car donated by Rusted Nutz of Garland, Pa., that visitors can pay to destroy later in the day. A $5 donation purchases three swings with the tool of one’s choice.
– 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sensory Quiet Time, an hour of the event with no horns or sirens.
– 12:30 p.m. Freddy Frogs Foam Dance Party. Children can take part in blown bubbly foam and music by a DJ for a dance party.
Touch a Truck brings up to 2,000 people annually to Betts Park and is in its sixth year. Touch a Truck is sponsored by Cable Hollow Golf Course, Kwik Fill, Northwest, Sugar Grove Am Vets, Highmark, Taraska Bus, Shults of Warren, JMI, Lytle’s Car Clinic, Cummins, Lictus Oil and Propane, Superior Tire, Crossett and Calvert Pearson.
