The Warren Forest Higher Education Council is celebrating the graduation of the first-ever cohort of middle school students from its new Youth Leadership Program.
The initiative, launched as part of Hi-Ed’s School to Work efforts, recognized 15 students for their year-long commitment to leadership development, civic engagement, and personal growth.
The graduation ceremony, held at First Lutheran Church in Warren, honored the students with certificates and peer-nominated awards. Twelve students attended in person, while three others – Alaina Ongley, Evelyn Ongley and Matthew Franklin – were recognized in absentia for their full participation and dedication throughout the year.
“These young leaders didn’t just learn about leadership – they embodied it,” said Angela Bigelow, Hi-Ed’s Assistant Director and School to Work Coordinator. “They supported each other, showed up with heart, and made every session matter. Watching them grow into confident, compassionate voices for their community has been incredibly inspiring.”
The program, open to students in sixth through eighth, introduced participants to leadership concepts through interactive sessions, field experiences, and mentorship from community professionals.
Students met on non-school days and traveled across Warren County, learning about problem-solving, teamwork, and how to make a difference in their communities.
Peer-chosen awards recognized the unique strengths of each participant: Charlotte Andersen – Leadership in Action Award, CJ Archer – Quick Thinker Award, Gabby Bigelow – Most Encouraging, Ezra Bingman – Brave and Speaks Up Award, Bobbi Gafner – Always Brings the Laughs, Anna Hagberg – Always Ready to Help, Amolia Jackson – Civic Spirit Award, Naveen Mead – Always Does What’s Right, Gaven Mealy – Strong Voice Award, Alice Watt – Great Collaborator, Minie Watt – Most Inspiring Effort Award and Trenton Wright – Future Mayor Award.
One of the program’s highlights was a trip to Harrisburg, where the students visited the state capitol and met with state Sen. Scott Hutchinson, R-Oil City, and state Rep. Kathy Rapp, R-Warren. The lawmakers personally welcomed the group, offering a firsthand look at public service and civic leadership.
“This was a true community effort,” said Bigelow. “We’re so thankful for the professionals and organizations who gave their time and passion to inspire these students.”
