Auxiliary assessment appeal board members sought

Warren County is looking for at least 10 people to help handle the expected number of property reassessment challenges expected as part of the county’s ongoing property reassessment.

The county has a standing board of assessment appeals but is looking to develop two additional auxiliary appeal boards, each consisting of three members and two alternates, to help adjudicate revaluation appeals.

Individuals with a working knowledge of the real estate market are best positioned to serve but there are

no formal requirements to be eligible outside of being a Warren County resident. Those selected to serve

will be required to complete training prior to hearing an appeal.

“You want a mix of individuals with backgrounds beneficial to the decision making of that process,” said Commissioner Dan Glotz.

The deadline to schedule an informal review of properties ended on Friday. Those informal reviews will take place through June and July and focus focused on discussing property characteristics, including if the property is assessed correctly, if it has the number of bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage listed, if garages and outbuildings are captured correctly and if there are blighted properties adjacent to a property that could impact its value. Residents are encouraged to bring photos to those sessions to evidence those impacts.

Formal challenges can be undertaken after July, with actual appeals likely to begin in August and run into October or November, depending on the number of appeals that need to be heard. During the formal appeal, property owners can present their own evidence of the property’s fair market value and, if still unsatisfied with the Board of Assessment Appeals’ decision, make a further appeal to the Court of Common Pleas.

The schedule for appeals is likely to be five days a week, 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., with an hour break for lunch. Those who might be able to serve most, but not all, days are encouraged to apply. Auxiliary appeal board members will be paid $200 per day for their service.

Anyone interested in serving on one of the auxiliary appeal boards is asked to call the Assessment office at 814-728-3420 or email assessment@warrencountypa.gov.

Starting at $3.50/week.
