Over the course of three days, each class period transformed from a typical culinary lesson into a full-blown kitchen showdown.
Students scoured the internet for the ultimate chili recipes, while a few clever chefs simply raided their recipe box for a time-tested secret weapon.
Every period produced a winning group. Warren Area High School teachers served as judges.
“Our teachers didn’t hold back,” Alexander said. “They took their judging responsibilities very seriously. I think a few of them might be considering second careers as professional chili critics.”

Judging was based on a formula involving taste, texture, aroma, and, according to one judge, “the ability to make me want a second bowl immediately”
Recipes included spicy varieties, hearty chilis, some full of beef and some vegetarian options.
“The students really put their hearts — and their stomachs — into it,” Alexander said. “This event isn’t just about cooking; it’s about learning teamwork, creativity, and maybe a little bit about handling kitchen disasters when they happen.”
The second period winning team was comprised of Madison Cornman, Olivia Reynolds, Blake Ristau and Elliot Striker. The fourth period winning team was Janey Ickert, Sydney Johnson, Lily Walker and Alyssa Wismar. Members of the sixth period winning team were Anna Courson, Zoe Gearhart, Jahzara Hunter and Lexi Paris. The seventh-period winner were Noel Alexander, Ava Nelson and Madelyn Nosel.
