The Wallflowers, known for a string of 1990s hits, are coming to the Struthers Library Theatre in September.
The band, led by Jakob Dylan, released a 10-track album in 2021 titled “Exit Wounds” that Dylan told The Associated Press refers to personal baggage.
“Wherever you’re headed, even if it’s to a better place, you leave people and things behind, and you think about those people and those things and you carry them with you. Those are your exit wounds,” Dylan told the Associated Press when Exit Wounds was released in 2021.
The Wallflowers broke nationally with the release of Bringing Down the Horse in 1996. That album produced a hit on alternative radio, “6th Avenue Heartache” as well as “One Headlight” and “The Difference.” Bringing Down the Horse sold millions of records and “One Headlight” won Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1997.
After releasing another three albums on Interscope records, Dylan began releasing solo albums. Their sixth and seventh albums, Glad All Over (2012) and Exit Wounds (2021)
The Wallflowers have undergone several lineup changes since their early 1990s heyday, including keyboardist Rami Jaffee joining the Foo Fighters while other members left for other projects, prompting Dylan to say he would perform as a solo act using the name The Wallflowers with a touring band performing with Dylan.
“The Wallflowers have always been a vehicle for me to make great rock ‘n’ roll records,” Dylan said in a news release when releasing “Exit Wounds.” “And sometimes the lineup that makes the record transfers over into touring, and sometimes it doesn’t. But my intention is always to make the Wallflowers record I want to make, using the musicians I have beside me.”
Dylan has released two acoustic albums, Seeing Things in 2008 and Women + Country in 2010 while also serving as executive producer and star in the 2018 documentary film Echo in the Canyon. The film found Dylan collaborating with a host of artists that included Neil Young, Brian Wilson, Beck and Fiona Apple. Echo In the Canyon was also the last on-screen appearance by Tom Petty and was the ninth biggest theatrical documentary released that year.
