School board recognizes life-saving effort at track meet

The Warren County School District is honoring a group who helped revive a coach who collapsed during a recent track meet.

Misty Weber, principal at Sheffield Area Middle/High School presented the recognitions during a recent school board meeting. Special recognition was given to Colby Barr, Mike Barr, Rusty Barr, Dane Renwick, and the Sheffield Area Middle High School (SAMHS) Track Team and Staff for their response during a track-related medical emergency. Their quick action and care exemplified responsibility and teamwork.

“On April 3, our Wolverines hosted Johnsonburg in Youngsville, what began as a routine athletic event quickly turned into a powerful moment of unity and life-saving action. Just before the meet began, a Johnsonburg coach collapsed due to a sudden cardiac arrest,” Weber said. “Without hesitation, several trained individuals rushed to his side and immediately began administering CPR. At the same time, our athletes, coaches, staff and spectators, worked together to create a privacy barrier around the scene. Shielding the emergency responders with dignity and respect. Allowing life-saving efforts to continue uninterrupted. Because of the swift and coordinated response, the coach regained a pulse and consciousness on site and is now on the road to recovery. This evening we would like to proudly recognize the heroes whose quick thinking and training saved a life.”
