Area residents are among those who will have one final opportunity to see the Oak Ridge Boys live in concert.
The legendary country and gospel band, which is in the midst of its American Made farewell tour, will stop in Pittsfield to perform at 7:30 p.m. August 5 at the Warren County Fairgrounds.
“We are doing a farewell tour because we owe it to our fans to say goodbye,” said band member William Lee Golden when the tour was announced in 2023. “They have always been there for us through the good times and the bad. I will always be thankful to every person who came out to a show, bought a t-shirt, played our music, and overall, loved us enough to spend their hard-earned money whenever they could. This tour is for you!”
The band has continued touring after the 2024 death of Joe Bonsall, the Oak Ridge Boys’ famed tenor and Grammy Award winner, from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
In September 2023, the Oak Ridge Boys embarked on a farewell tour that was scheduled to last into 2024. But in January 2024, Bonsall announced his retirement from touring, saying it was too difficult for him physically after a four-year battle with ALS. Ben James, who has performed with Doyle Lawson and Dailey & Vincent, was announced as his replacement.
James was introduced to The Oak Ridge Boys during a 2022 concert in Wheeling, W.V., according to the band’s website, where Dailey & Vincent shared the bill with The Oak Ridge Boys. Bonsall’s final show was on Dec. 17, while James’s first show with the group took place Dec. 30.
“Joe handed me the mic and said, ‘You’ve got the next verse,'” James recalled in a statement. “And I’m not sure I will ever get over that moment. ‘Elvira’ was always on repeat when I was growing up. It’s still one of those timeless songs that never grow old.”
The Oak Ridge Boys have received four Academy of Country Music, two American Music, five Billboard, four Country Music Association, five Grammy, and twelve Gospel Music Association Dove awards. They are members of the Grand Ole Opry, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and the Country Music Hall of Fame. They have achieved 17 number one hits, including “Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight,” “Bobbie Sue,” “Trying To Love Two Women,” “(I’m Settin’) Fancy Free,” “American Made,” and “Elvira.” The Oak Ridge Boys have recorded 37 Top 20 country hits, with 12 gold, three platinum, and one double-platinum album to their credit.
“For all of my career I have always been a planner, sometimes planning 2 or 3 years in advance, what we will do, where we will go, and when we record,” said Oak Ridge Boy member Duane Allen. “As we celebrate 50 years of being together, just as you see us, we will, also, begin our American Made: Farewell Tour. I don’t know how long the tour will last, but we hope to return to as many parts of the country as we can. Thank you so much for these 50 years. For me, it’s 57 1/2 years. I have given you the best part of my life and you have rewarded me with a wonderful career. Thank you, our dear fans. Thanks to God for His divine guidance. Thank you to our wonderful organization. Thank you to all the supporting companies who represent us. And thank you to our families.”
The Oak Ridge Boys performance at the Warren County Fair’s KeyBank Pavilion on Aug. 5 is free with paid gate admission.
