Implementation of the Enhanced Core Reading Instruction program at Warren Area Elementary Center for kindergarten and first-grade students is boosting early literacy in the district

The program has already yielded notable results, with 72 kindergarten students (66%) meeting the end-of-year benchmark for correct letter sounds. ECRI is a multi-tiered program designed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of reading instruction for young learners. WAEC’s journey with ECRI began in the 2023-2024 school year after receiving the Success for PA Early Learners (SPEL) Grant. Kindergarten and first-grade teachers underwent training and gradually integrated ECRI into their curriculum. The 2024-2025 school year marked the first full implementation for these grades, with plans to extend training to second-grade teachers for the upcoming year.

“None of this would be possible without the dedication of our K-1 teachers who have shown incredible collaboration, resilience, and belief in their students,” said Shawn Bedow, school principal. “Your commitment to early literacy is changing lives. You are not just teaching children how to read; you are empowering them with a skill that will open doors for a lifetime.”

The board extended its appreciation to the educators instrumental in this achievement:

– Kindergarten Teachers: Amanda Stebbins, Pam Taylor, Jillian Johnson, Kasaundra Cressley, Mary Weaver, Melissa Feaster, Marc Page.

– First-Grade Teachers: Kristen Bosko, Becky Ickert, Erica Blair, Alyssa Strandburg, Karly Taylor, Vicky Mechling, Colleen Vignere, Joshua Layton. Instructional Coach: Medina Reynolds, Reading Specialist: Pam Striker.

– The meeting commenced with a performance by Peyton Vincent and Joseph Blasco, portraying Morticia and Gomez Addams, respectively, from the upcoming All-County Junior Musical, “The Addams Family.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
