An Eisenhower Elementary/Middle School student is among the top 10% of students competing in a recent national math competition.

Second through eighth graders from Beaty-Warren, Eisenhower, Youngsville and Warren Area Elementary Center participated in the National Noetic Math Contest in December. The Noetic Learning Math Competition exists to develop students’ problem-solving skills and help them improve academic performance in math. During the contest, students have 50 minutes online to solve 20 creative problems independently and without a calculator. Each grade level competes in its division, and students work independently during the competition.

This fall, local students were part of a nationwide community, with more than 31,000 students participating in the contest. The top 10% of students receive National Honor Roll medals.

Derek Leach, a fifth grader from Eisenhower, was among the National Honor Roll medal winners.

“The competition was really fun and engaging,” Leach said. “I didn’t really care what place or medal I got, but it was really fun to see the score I got.”

Team Winners/National Honorable Mention Winners from Warren Area Elementary Center are Nicholas Abrams, Symphony Weber and Grayson Zapel.

Students scoring in the top 50% earned Honorable Mention ribbons. Additionally, each team is given a team winner medal for their highest scorer. Honorable mention winners included:

– Griffin Brinkley, fifth grade at Beaty-Warren, who said “I didn’t expect to get first place because it was challenging, and it took a lot of hard work. But I was excited.”

– Owen Damcott, seventh grade at Beaty-Warren, who said “You just have to try your best and you will see the results.”

– Ashton Carrington, seventh grade at Beaty-Warren, who said “I thought it was challenging but I enjoyed it. There was some good competition.”

– Liam Farmery, fourth grade at Youngsville, who said “I felt very good because I didn’t think I was going to get anything!”
