Eisenhower elementary school students got an out-of-classroom lesson on bus safety recently.
National School Bus Safety Week was celebrated October 21-25, with a theme this school year of ‘Driving Safely into the Future’.
Tiffany Jackson, a school bus driver for D&R Transportation, went to Eisenhower Elementary each morning last week to help educate students about school bus safety,
The students actively engaged in learning about bus safety and its importance. Jackson stated that the basics were covered.
“They were reminded to stay in their seats, never to run towards a bus, and to be alert when crossing the road,” she said.
Teaching students a simple acronym for bus safety could help keep them SAFE.
S: Stay at least 10 feet (five giant steps) away from the curb while you wait.
A: Always wait for the bus to stop completely and the driver to signal it’s time to get on board.
F: Face forward once you’re in your seat.
E: Exit the bus after it stops completely. Always cross in front of the bus, once the driver signals that it’s safe to do so.
Jackson, who spent the mornings with the students, had nothing but positive feedback.
“All of the children were great,” she said. “This reassures us that the safety measures we’re teaching are not only effective but also well-received by the students.”
As a continuation of the bus safety lessons, students also received activity books. The books are designed to reinforce the safety measures and ensure that the learning continues and the children’s safety is a top priority.
