Route 426 reopen after bridge work completed
Rt. 426 between Garland and Spring Creek is reopened.
The road had been closed for a couple weeks as crews completed the construction of a box culvert that carries the road over Brokenstraw Creek.
Replacement of the 19-foot bridge started on Sept. 16. The bridge is located about 4.5 miles north of the intersection with Rt. 27.
“The project will include removal of the existing structure and replacing it with a precast concrete box culvert,” PennDOT said in a statement. “Work will also include minor paving of the roadway leading up to the bridge as well as an updated guiderail.”
The detour was extensive – 21.8 miles and utilized Rt. 27 and US 6.
The current bridge was built in 1935 and is classified by PennDOT as in “poor condition.”
About 900 vehicles each day use the bridge.
The work was completed by Chivers Construction Company, Inc. of Fairview, Pa. while the total cost is just over $725,000.
