Remains found are those of Warren man

Skeletal remains found by kayakers last weekend on an island in the Allegheny River in Forest County have been identified as a Warren man.

In a news release issued by the Forest County coroner’s office on Thursday, Coroner Norman J. Wimer identified the remains found on Saturday as those of Christopher Troy Smith, 51.

“When I issued my news release this past Sunday, I asked that anyone who knows of anyone missing in the area to please contact the coroner’s office,” Wimer said. “I received two leads on Monday — one from a woman who said her son had been missing since January from Warren.

“After speaking to her, I thought it was a good lead and she gave me information on a dentist Smith had last seen. I subpoenaed his records and took the remains along with dental records to a Forensic Anthropologist at Mercyhurst College in Erie … who performed a forensic review. … It was a perfect identifiable match.”

Wimer said the cause of death remains undetermined. In working with the Pennsylvania State Police, Wimer said he believes there is nothing suspicious. “There are no signs of any trauma to the remains and in speaking with Mr. Smith’s family, we have no concerns of anything suspicious or criminal,” he said.
