Upgraded recess: Toy Shoppe donates to first grade classrooms in WCSD
They’ve found one in the Warren County School District.
Recess during the winter can be a challenge.
That makes for a perfect match.
Last year, Toy Shoppe volunteers delivered toys to all kindergarten classrooms in Warren County.
This year? First grade.
Deliveries have been made to first grade classrooms throughout the county in recent days.
“There truly aren’t words to express our gratitude,” Kylie Harris, principal at Sheffield Elementary, said. “Just look at the happiness in the children’s faces; what could possibly be better than seeing pure joy in a child’s eyes?”
“This is a super special service this group is doing for our schools and it is much appreciated,” Youngsville Elementary Principal Amy Stimmell added.
Having had the toys for a year, kindergarten teachers are seeing benefits.
“Kindergarten absolutely loved having more accessories to go inside their kitchen,” Stephanie Lindberg, who teaches at Sheffield, said. “Students greatly enjoy playing with the wooden food. There are handmade wooden beds, highchairs, and strollers.”
Lindberg highlighted how the toys have students using their imaginations.
“Helping students learn to tie their shoes with the wooden shoelace helpers has also been a very beneficial and enjoyable experience to be a part of,” she added. “We greatly appreciate this act of generosity from the Toy Shoppe.”
“Along with the first grade toy distribution, kindergarten classrooms also received a newly completed barn set,” Tauni Lindsey, who teaches kindergarten at Sheffield, added. “This will be perfect for our upcoming Core Knowledge Language Arts Farm Unit.”
The toys that wind up in classrooms are often gently used, Molly Chapman, first grade teacher at Sheffield said.
“These toys are such a blessing to us,” she said. “(T)o have brand new perfectly made toys just for us, that is just such a blessing.”
Emily Jones added that her first graders are “excited to have new trucks, painted like the ones we see in our neighborhood, furniture to play house and school with, and a large variety of other fun toys to enjoy as we play indoors.
“I am thankful for the enrichment toys like the word maker and the shoes to practice tying,” she added. “We already have a few friends practicing that skill with the new “shoes!”
