Milking contest, steer dump held at the Warren County Fair
There are some events that you really wouldn’t expect to find anywhere but a county fair.
Hundreds of people gathered Friday afternoon at the Warren County Fair waiting for a steer to… do his business.
A crowd gathered around the milking parlor to watch Fair royalty and law enforcement milk a cow.
Ladies and gentlemen, the Steer Dump and the Celebrity Milking Contest.
The milking contest pitted Fair royalty and members of the law enforcement community squaring off in a unique competition — the person who gets the most milk wins.
Former Sheriff Brian Zeybel was always involved in the competition and it appears that the milking contest passed on as part of the job description to Scott Neiswonger, who said he had never milked a cow before.
Each participant had 90 seconds to get the most milk they could.
Was it as awkward as it sounds?
“Yeah,” Neiswonger said, who realized early on that aim was a part of the game.
An hour later, hundreds gathered to watch a steer named Arrow wander around the Show Ring, waiting for him to do his business.
He pranced at times, plodded at others and stared quizzically at the crowd for about 25 minutes. Just as a second steer was brought into the ring to speed up the competition, Arrow picked the winner.
Throughout, people were laughing, eating and — at times — cheering expectantly.
And there was reason to do so. There was a $1,000 grand prize as well as three $100 and two $50 prizes based on where the steer did his work.
The event is the sole fundraiser for Crime Stoppers, which assists law enforcement by providing both a tip line and rewards for information leading to arrests in certain cases.
Most notably that included a $2,000 award to the couple who spotted Michael Burham.
Crime Stoppers has been sponsoring the event since at least the early 1990s.
Those who weren’t there to pick up their prize can stop by or contact the sheriff’s office.
