Lane closures in place for Wed., Ths. on Veterans Memorial Bridge

Lane closures on the Veterans Memorial Bridge in downtown Warren will be in place Wednesday and Thursday.

Department of Public Works Superintendent Joe Reinke said the closures will allow crews to repaint the traffic arrows and lines on the roadway as well as apply linseed oil to the concrete.

Reinke said the bridge will never be completely closed though land shifts will occur throughout the work.

He added that crews will “wait until the early morning traffic dies down,” starting the work around 8:30 a.m. or 9 a.m., working until 3 p.m.

Weather in the forecast could impact the work but Reinke said they hope to wrap up the bulk of it on Wednesday and Thursday.

He added that the linseed oil can’t be applied if it’s raining.

The linseed oil is a preventative maintenance step and essentially works as a sealant for the concrete. City staff try to apply the substance to the major bridges in the city every three years.

Other bridges have remained closed overnight when undergoing this treatment but Reinke said that won’t be the case here.

“If it’s dried well, we can pull the cones at 3 p.m.,” he said. “If it’s still tacky, we can leave a lane closed overnight. It all depends on the weather.”
