ANF to offer orienteering program at Hearts Content Saturday
The Forest Service is offering an orienteering course at Hearts Content this weekend.
The ranger program is set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon and will teach the basics of orienteering.
“All are welcome to join as we discuss the basics of navigation using only a map and compass,” Ranger Sarah Needs said.
“We will be utilizing the existing orienteering courses at Hearts Content, finding ‘control’ points along the trail.”
According to ANF Public Affairs Officer Christopher Leeser, the program will use an intermediate orienteering course.
“Approximately two miles of hiking is expected, primarily on-trail, with short off-trail portions,” Leeser said. “Maps and compasses will be provided.”
Discussion of the Leave No Trace Principles will be included to provide a framework of minimum impact practices while exploring the outdoors.
“We recommend participants wear weather-appropriate clothing, hiking boots or shoes, and bring insect protection and water,” Leeser said. “Participants should meet no later than 9:50 a.m. in the Hearts Content parking area.”
