The hills are alive!: ‘Music on the Mountain’ returns with venue change

Submitted photo The popular "Music on the Mountain" event will move to Warren for this year's show on July 27, offering benefits for all parties involved.

For the first time since its inceptive event in 2015, “Music in the Mountain ” will occur in the city of Warren.

According to Art Lane, the Sheffield Music Boosters Chairman and Music on the Mountain founder, the event will be moved to War Memorial Field in Warren for the July 27, drum corp event.

The fundraiser, which benefits the Sheffield school band and music programs, has been held at the Sheffield football field for the past eight years.

Although the change is bittersweet for organizers and Sheffield residents, it offers improvement to the overall experience for the musicians, organizers, and attendees.

Logistics have been a hurdle since the beginning — sleeping arrangements, equipment room, and musicians’ transitions were all concerns. While with experience, there have been improvements over the years, the venue change offers benefits beyond what the mountain could.

Moving to War Memorial Field makes financial sense.

In Sheffield, lights for the shows must be brought in, and the rental cost is over $2,000.

In comparison, War Memorial has fixed stadium lights, and the entire space costs $1,500 to rent.

The added space helps the musicians get and stay set up, making transitions more manageable. Not to mention, the lack of a daunting hill to carry the equipment up and down makes it more accessible.

Another benefit of the change is the turf-over-grass factor. Turf fields are much better in the case of rain, where a grass field turns to mud.

Nine Open Class DCI drum corps are scheduled to perform including 7th Regiment from New London, Connecticut; The Battalion Drum & Bugle Corps from Salt Lake City, Utah; Gold from Lemon Grove, California; Les Stentors from Sherbrooke, Quebec; Raiders from Princeton, New Jersey; Rogues Hollow Regiment from Doylestown, Ohio; Sonus Brass Theater from Woodbridge, Virginia; Spartans from Nashua, New Hampshire; and Steel City Ambassadors from Gibsonia, Pennsylvania.

Presale tickets can be purchased at the Sheffield Pharmacy, Peterson Hardware, Crone’s Gifts & Medical Supply, or at www.smotm.org. They are $15 (an additional $1 fee for website purchases), and tickets at the door are $20.

Starting at $2.99/week.
