County to the Capitol: Dairy Princess meets with state officials to promote industry

Photo provided to the Times Observer Warren County Dairy Princess Kelsey Alcorn was able to meet with state officials including Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding during a “Dairy Day at the Capitol” event on June 27.

The job of the Warren County Dairy Princess is to promote the dairy industry and the value of drinking milk.

Warren County Dairy Princess Keeley Alcorn recently had the opportunity to do just that at the highest levels of state government.

The event was called “Dairy Day at the Capitol” and took place at the state capitol building in Harrisburg on June 27.

It included a visit with Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding as well as serving milkshakes to state officials and representatives.

“The big part of the morning was showcasing the immense value and impact the dairy industry has on the Commonwealth,” Alcorn said. “They spoke on the budget and the potential benefits the dairy industry could experience following the passage of the state budget.”

June is Dairy Month and the event also recognized local farmers.

She said that Redding’s message was “more on being able to go out and promote the dairy industry as a dairy princess.

“We are on the front lines and the advocates for our dairy farmers,” she added, noting that the state is home to nearly 5,000 dairy farmers and 468,000 cows with an economic impact of $11.8 billion, supporting 47,000 jobs.

In addition to meeting with officials, she was able to tour the capitol building.

“From the tour what caught my eye was the structure itself is amazing and all the details it had,” she said,

Alcorn said the art work of Violet Oakley on display at the capitol specifically caught her eye.

“She was the first woman artist to do this as well,” she said. “She was an amazing artist.”
