ANF to offer free orienteering program
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service is offering an opportunity to learn basic navigation skills in the Allegheny National Forest. This is a free, ranger-led program and is open to the public. This informative program will take place on Saturday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Heart’s Content Recreation Area near Tidioute.
“All are welcome to join as we discuss the basics of navigation using only a map and compass. We will be utilizing the existing orienteering courses at Hearts Content, finding ‘control’ points along the trail.” said Ranger Sarah Needs.
This program will utilize the intermediate orienteering course, which is moderately difficult. Participants will hike approximately two miles, mostly on-trail, with some short off-trail portions.
Maps and compasses will be provided for participants to use.
A discussion of the Leave No Trace Principles , a set of guidelines for outdoor ethics, will be included to provide a framework for minimum-impact practices while exploring the outdoors.
The ANF recommends participants wear weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy hiking boots or shoes, and bring insect protection and water.
Those wanting to participate are asked to meet in the Hearts Content parking area no later than 1:20 p.m.
