Kid-centered events set for Saturday

Multiple events for kids are set for Saturday in downtown Warren.

The second annual Bicycle Rodeo will pedal off at 11 a.m. and run to 1 p.m.on Liberty St. between Second Ave. and Third Ave. while Free Books for Kids Town will have events from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Second Ave. and at Warren Antiques.

Registration for the bike rodeo will begin at 10:30 a.m. and is open to kids ages five to 12 years old.

“The Warren Cycle Shop, the City of Warren’s Police Department and the Warren Lions Club are partnering for this event,” City Manager Mike Holtz said. “The rodeo will consist of five skill building stations that the children will cycle through with their bike.”

Each station is designed to emphasize a different set of bicycle skills.

“A couple of the stations are the ‘Look Back’ station that teaches awareness of the child’s soundings and a ‘Newspaper Delivery’ station that has the kids ride through an obstacle course while tossing newspapers into a basket. This station helps to teach coordination and balance,” Holtz said.

The city’s police department and the Warren Cycle Shop are planning to hold a “Bike Safety Check.” Those without a properly fitted helmet will be given one at no cost while two new bicycles will be awarded to the children who complete the course in the fastest time. Age brackets for the prize will be five to eight years old and then nine to 12 years old.

Hot dogs, chips, cookies and drinks will be provided at no cost.

Holtz said about 40 children participated in 2023.

“It was a great success despite the rainy weather,” he said. “We hope to see an even better turnout this year.”

Free Books for Kids Town is also holding its second Children’s Interactive Festival on Second Ave. between Liberty St. and the Fountain.

Over 20 booths of hands-on activities will be featured including carnival games, build a bird feeder, paint a wooden mask, World War II memorabilia, a May the 4th Be With You costume parade, creativity center and basket raffle.

Additionally, over 1,000 free comic books will be available on a first come, first served basis from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kids Town Books inside Warren Antiques in commemoration of National Comic Book Day.
